The Art of Human Potential
Dr. John Sherman, D.C., D.I.B.A.K.

Your initial visit

For your first visit, you should allow roughly an hour and a half. When you come in to the office, you’ll be greeted by our office manager Carol. After filling out some paperwork, you will meet with Dr. Sherman. He will take a thorough history, getting to know what is going on in your life, and understanding your goals of treatment, including what past and present problems you’d like to work on. Following this, Dr. Sherman will conduct an in depth examination.

This exam consists of a detailed orthopedic and neurological evaluation, blood pressure, pulse, as well as height-weight evaluation. In addition, Dr Sherman will perform a detailed Applied Kinesiology exam that includes full body muscle testing as well as a general screening for inflammation, allergies, tolerance to bad fats, blood sugar handling, adrenal hyper/hypo function and oxygen utilization.

Based on the exam, Dr. Sherman will give you a complete diagnosis, explaining not only what problems you have, but more importantly what their true source is (e.g. dietary imbalance, allergy, organ dysfunction, etc.). He then will suggest the proper course of treatment, the first installment of which is often done in this initial visit and can include body/energy-work such as chiropractic manipulation and meridian therapy, as well as mind-work such as neuro-emotional technique (NET).

Homework

As part of your ongoing treatment, Dr. Sherman will give you "homework" to do, in order for you to maintain the corrections we have made in the office and to make sure that you continue to heal while you are out of the office. It is important that you take an active role in your own healing process by following his recommendations at home. Some of your homework may include:

  • Supplements — Dr. Sherman may suggest that you take supplements such as vitamins and homeopathic remedies. This may also include vitamins and minerals you are already taking. If you are taking supplements, we ask that you bring these in on your second visit, at which time Dr. Sherman will evaluate their effect on you and advise you to either continue or discontinue their use.
  • Diet — Dr. Sherman may also make dietary recommendations for you. Some of these will be easy, and others may be more difficult. Food items he may ask you to avoid can be anything from wheat, dairy foods, soy, and sugar, to hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils, and even some fruits or vegetables. Dr. Sherman will test these individual items to see how you react to them. By eliminating certain foods that your body reacts negatively to, this can have a profound effect on your health, preventing you from potentially being in a constant state of allergic reaction!
  • Exercise — Dr. Sherman may also ask you to start a light exercise program (if you currently do not actively participate in one), or he may modify your current activity program or level. Such recommendations are based your individual needs and how you are functioning at that particular time.
  • Mental/Emotional Work — Dr. Sherman may also ask you to do some work on the level of emotions (mind). For instance, he may recommend that you take a few minutes out of each day to meditate or to journal your positive as well as negative emotional experiences. Emotional stresses can come not only from within us, but also from the environment around us. Making a change at work, at home, or at school can prove vital in your overall healing.
Follow-up visits

On your next visit, we will go over your Report of Findings (ROF) which details the root causes of any dysfunctions you might have. Then we will do your second treatment. The treatment will include, but are not limited to, muscle testing and proper balancing, meridian therapy, chemistry evaluation and balancing, and chiropractic manipulation (if necessary). Each treatment is different than the previous one because your body’s needs change as healing progresses. The second visit usually runs 30 minutes. Subsequent visits are typically 15 minutes unless Dr. Sherman determines that he needs more time with you.

During follow-up visits, Dr. Sherman is constantly re-evaluating you to see what has improved or not improved since your last visit. Each visit builds on the previous one, so it is very important that you come in even if you feel perfectly well that particular day. If you're feeling good, this means we are on the right track, and your visit will only reinforce this!

In general, two visits per week for the first two weeks is a great start, and this is usually what is recommended for most patients. As far as subsequent visits, the frequency is based on a number of factors, the most significant of which are the severity of your condition and your rate of healing. After two weeks, Dr. Sherman will conduct a mini re-exam and will have a better idea of how quickly your healing is progressing. He will then advise you how often to come in over the coming weeks. Follow-up visits typically range from once a week to once a month.

Re-exam

A re-exam is another evaluation that is performed after your initial two weeks, and then once per month. Dr. Sherman re-tests the initial positive findings of your general screen, your muscle imbalances, and dietary/nutritional dysfunctions or deficiencies. The re-exam gives Dr. Sherman the opportunity to show you your rate of healing and advise you on the next phase of treatment.

Ongoing wellness

Once your body has reached a higher level of function, Dr Sherman will place you on what he calls "fine-tuning" care. As you continue your journey of healing, keeping up with the physical/emotional homework outside the office, Dr. Sherman will be there to see that you succeed.

Our recommendation is to come in for a visit about once every 3-4 weeks, just to make sure everything is progressing as it should, or to catch something before it becomes a major problem. The last thing we want is for your condition to revert to where it was before!

Our goal is to get you functioning at your highest level, and reaching every bit of your potential! So go ahead, make an appointment and get started on your path to healing.
